Hot Topic, works by Kirsten McCrea
March 1, 2011 – May 14, 2011
The work of Montreal based artist Kirsten McCrea uses pop and underground culture, the media, and popular mythologies to explore explores issues of cultural memory. ‘Hot Topic’ is a series of 60 paintings that turn traditional portraiture on it’s head. Gone is the solitary genius, here replaced with a wall of underground superstars. The goal of the project is to engage in a form of activism that is not critical of dominant culture, but instead celebratory of feminist culture and alternative social movements.
